A root the thickness of your wrist can lift a paver driveway two inches. Here is how we remove it without tearing out the whole surface.

If one section of your paver driveway or walkway has risen into a hump, the cause is almost never the pavers. It is what is growing underneath them. Live oaks, laurel oaks, and magnolias send shallow feeder roots outward for decades, and a paver base is one of the easiest places for them to travel: loose, moist, and full of air.

Why roots go under pavers in the first place

Pavers sit on a compacted base topped with bedding sand. That sand layer holds moisture after every Florida rain and drains slowly, which makes it prime real estate for roots. Once a root finds it, the root thickens season after season, and the only place for that growth to go is up.

Signs you are dealing with roots, not settling

• The damage is raised, not sunken — settling goes down, roots push up
• The lift runs in a line pointing back toward a tree trunk
• Joint sand keeps washing out of the same spot after every storm
• A single paver rocks underfoot while the rest of the field is solid
• Cracked or split pavers directly over the high point

How we do root removal paver repair

We lift and number the affected pavers so they go back exactly where they came from, expose the root, and cut it back cleanly with the right tool for the size — never a shovel chop that leaves a shredded stub inviting rot. Larger structural roots get evaluated for tree health before anything is cut. We then rebuild the base, recompact it, reset the pavers to grade, and re-sand the joints.

Why a cosmetic fix does not last

Shaving the high pavers or adding sand on top hides the problem for a season. The root keeps growing, the hump comes back, and now you have thinned pavers that chip. Removing the root and rebuilding the base is the only repair that holds.

What root repair costs

Root paver repair runs $20 per square foot with a $350 minimum and is always subject to field approval, because what is under the surface is only fully visible once we open it up. Sunken paver repair, where no root is involved, runs $15 per square foot with a 15 square foot and $250 minimum. You get the number in writing before we start.
