Pressure Washing vs. Soft Washing: Which One Does Your Home Actually Need?

6 min read

High pressure is perfect for concrete and completely wrong for siding. Here is how professionals decide which method each surface gets.

Most exterior cleaning damage we get called out to repair has the same root cause: the wrong method on the wrong surface. A 3,500 PSI tip will strip algae off a concrete driveway beautifully and blow the paint off a stucco wall just as fast. Knowing the difference is the whole job.

What pressure washing is good for

Pressure washing uses mechanical force — water at high pressure — to physically remove grime. It belongs on hard, non-porous, structurally solid surfaces where the material can take the impact.

  • Concrete driveways, walkways, and pool decks
  • Brick and paver patios (with a surface cleaner attachment for even results)
  • Garage floors and commercial loading areas
  • Heavy oil, rust, and tire-mark staining

What soft washing is good for

Soft washing uses low pressure — often no more pressure than a garden hose — combined with professional cleaning solutions that kill the organic growth at the root. Instead of blasting mold off the wall, it kills it so it does not grow back in six weeks.

  • Vinyl, stucco, Hardie board, and painted siding
  • Soffits, fascia, and gutters exterior
  • Screen enclosures and lanais
  • Wood fences and older decks

The damage high pressure causes on the wrong surface

  • Water forced behind siding, where it sits and grows mold inside the wall cavity
  • Stripped paint and etched stucco that needs repainting, not cleaning
  • Splintered, furred wood on decks and fences
  • Blown window seals and damaged screens

How we decide on your property

During your free inspection we walk the property and identify every surface, its material, its age, and its condition. Siding and screens get soft wash. Flatwork gets pressure with a surface cleaner. Transitions — like a brick knee wall under vinyl siding — get treated individually rather than hit with one setting for the whole house.

Royal Blue Washing is family-owned, fully insured, and local — and every job starts with a free on-site inspection and a written estimate, not a guess over the phone.
