Is Paver Sealing Worth It? What Sealing Actually Does for Your Driveway

6 min read

Sealing is the difference between pavers that look new in five years and pavers you replace in ten.

Pavers are an investment. Sealing is how you protect that investment — but it is often sold badly, applied to dirty surfaces, or skipped entirely. Here is the honest version.

What sealing actually protects against

  • Oil, grease, rust, and leaf tannin stains that otherwise soak straight into porous concrete
  • UV fade that turns rich reds and charcoals chalky and washed out
  • Weeds and ant hills pushing up through unstable joint sand
  • Efflorescence and freeze-related surface spalling
  • Shifting and rocking pavers caused by joint sand washing out in heavy rain

The process matters more than the product

Sealer is not a cleaner. Anything on the surface when the sealer goes down is locked under it — permanently. Our sequence is always the same:

  • Deep clean the pavers and flush out contaminated joint sand
  • Treat any remaining rust, oil, or organic staining
  • Allow the surface to fully dry
  • Re-sand the joints with polymeric or approved joint sand and compact
  • Apply sealer in even coats, respecting the manufacturer's coverage rate

Finish options

A natural-look penetrating sealer protects without changing appearance. A wet-look or semi-gloss sealer deepens the color and makes the pavers pop. Both are legitimate choices — we will show you what each looks like on your specific pavers during the inspection.

How long it lasts

Expect two to four years depending on sun exposure, vehicle traffic, and the sealer selected. Sun-baked south-facing driveways are on the shorter end; shaded patios stretch longer. Re-sealing on schedule is far cheaper than restoring a neglected surface.
